goal 08. part 02 || that time i saw a grammy winning band.

this past summer, maine got lucky. some people shit on maine. saying we're all toothless hicks chewing grass in the middle of a potato field wearing camo and carharts. well, that's only true for 2% of this state. the other 98% is filled with people who get high off being out in nature...hiking, climbing, paddling, surfing, sailing, biking, camping, fishing, skiing, boarding, swimming and boating.. strangers who say hi in public, hold the door for you, let you pull out in traffic and strike up conversations in the grocery line... friends who travel 20 miles to deliver soup when you're sick or ice cream when you're sad... farm, fruit, camp fire, wildflower stands for miles in the summer where the seller just leaves a can out for you to put your money in, they trust you... extremely hard workers on lobster boats, farms and businesses big and small (most of those small businesses know you by name)... a place where you can go hiking deep in the woods and mountains and then watch the sunset on the ocean in the same day. i've left this state several times. searching for something "better".. the california coast, the city, the mid west and you know, as much as i wanted to never come home, i always did. i always found my way back home to maine. we have a commercial that airs on the radio about how maine doesn't allow smoking in public places, at the end, the lady says "breathe easy, you're in maine" and that's exactly how i feel about my state. whenever i go out of state, coming home i cross the piscataqua river bridge and see the "welcome to maine" sign and i swear to god, i let out a huge exhale and my eyes well up. it's actually kind of lame. i just have so much love, admiration, respect and appreciation for this pine tree state. i'm proud to be from here, really proud.

annnnnnnnd back to the grammy award winning band and how maine got lucky... sorry i got a little sidetracked:)

so maine is amaze balls and i'm not the only one who thinks so. grammy award winning band mumford & sons thinks so too. so much so that they chose portland as 1 of the 5 US shows of their gentleman of the road tour. they brought with them 7 other bands including dawes, the dropkick murphys and apache relay as well as several local food and brew vendors. it was an AMAZING summer day on the eastern prom overlooking the sailboats and scattered islands in the atlantic ocean. some 15,000 fans attended from all over and it felt like a huge family picnic. blankets spread out all over the hill, people napping, reading, singing, dancing, talking... it was everything a festival should be right in the comfort of my own backyard. rolling stone wrote a great article about the day here.

and mumford delivered, boy did they ever. easily one of the best shows i've ever seen. they brought so much energy and passion with them. it literally radiated through the crowd and spilled over into the streets of downtown portland. the bands did several after parties in the downtown area and were so gracious and amazing.

they recently announced the stopovers for their 2013 gentleman of the road tour. please please, if you live near any of these places, go! you won't regret it.

here's some photos/video of the goodness, enjoy!

ANNNNNDDDDD they the whole tour covered my number one favorite song ever. somewhere in the crowd i am freaking out and fist pumping like a mad woman. heaven i tell you, heaven.

when you're a hardcore bill murray fan like me...

the northeast part of this country is getting pounded by mother nature right now. snow. lots and lots of snow. predicted 2 feet. what. the. fuck.

so in between shoveling mini cupcakes into my mouth and praying like crazy that the power doesn't go out each time the lights flicker, the only way to survive is a bill murray movie marathon. when the movie is over, you research it on imdb and then you pin the shit out of it on pinterest. repeat. this has been my life today. and i'm not even sad or embarrassed by it, probably because i'm hyped up on coffee and sugar.

it's no secret to my friends that i have creepy crushes on older actors. if i had a choice between any actor thats my age or david letterman/clint eastwood/steve carrell to play 7 minutes in heaven with, it's the latter all the way. every time. so it's no surprise that upon stumbling across the movie lost in translation, i also stumbled deep into obsession with all things bill murray. what can i say?

this weeks 'seen there & shared here' is an ode to bill. if you're not a fan, don't continue reading. and if that's the case, don't come back here because we probably have nothing in common anymore.

01. i'm cheap. after my first iphone case over $30 broke when i dropped my phone, i vowed to never spend more than $5 on one again. and then i saw this and it just so happens that i have $39 in my paypal account. so that justifies that purchase.

02. unfortunately i can't justify $150 but my birthday is in 12 days. hint hint.

03. so this is my thought process, when i get a coffee table, i'll put this coloring book on it. i'll encourage my guests to color a picture in it. it'll be a collaborative art project. and an excuse for a 28 year old to own a coloring book.

04. if i can't convince you to love bill, here are eight brilliant true stories to get the job done.

05. how the hell did i miss this tour?! as soon as i'm done with this post i'm going to get to work on my own sign. (after further research, no tour took place, phew!)

06. so many bill murray movies to watch, you say, where do i start? well, here is a list of his top 10 films. i don't agree with #1 though, it should be a tie between lost in translation and the life aquatic with steve zissou.

07. trailer for lost in translation.

08. trailer for the life aquatic with steve zissou.

09. clearly this was 14 minutes and 51 seconds of heaven for me.

10. did you know that bill murray got his start on snl back when it was actually funny?

happy weekend!!

and then my heart grew 10 whole sizes.

there are moments in your life where you can literally feel your heart grow and your perspective broaden. in those moments you look at the people around you and immediately want to embrace them all in a group hug. in those moments you realize that at the end of the day what we have is each other. you realize that there is no race or finish line to cross, we're in this together. and if you're lucky, those moments aren't fleeting. they linger... for a few minutes or hours.. perhaps even the day. you learn in those moments how to grab ahold of them and ride that shooting star's tail right out of the room. if you succeed, that star doesn't burn out when the day is over. that moment has become part of an intricate quilt and you wrap yourself with it's warmth and appreciation for all the days of your life.

in october i met a 4year old girl, isabelle. she lived in the town where i went to high school and had been diagnosed with stage 4 neutroblastoma in january. i read about her fight in the local newspaper and decided to friend request her mom on facebook so i could follow along with her journey. i wanted to help in some way but an opportunity hadn't presented itself. yet. fast forward to october, again... isabelle's mother had posted on facebook that her 5th birthday was approaching and they were looking for suggestions of places to have the party as funds were short this year and space was limited. my chance. there it was. i didn't think twice, i actually didn't even think about it. i immediately emailed her mom and asked if i could take care of the party, venue, favors, decorations, games etc. she gratefully accepted my offer and i'm pretty sure i was more excited in that moment than i ever had been on any christmas morning in my past.

isabelle's only requests for the party were a mickey mouse clubhouse theme, a pinata, and pepperoni slices. i had about 4 weeks to plan the party so i set out finding photo booth props, crafts, decorations, candy for a candy buffet, prizes, games, a minnie mouse party dress for the birthday girl and i even found mickey mouse shaped pepperoni slices. people rallied around me asking what they could do, they gave money, their time, their talents and other donations. i was blown away by it all. i felt so grateful for the amazing group of friends and family that i get to call mine, they supported me and helped in any way they could party wise, but they filled my heart to the brim as well.

the party went off without a hitch. i rented out a local recreation hall and we filled it with mickey mouse clubhouse balloons, decorations, candy, games and music. isabelle's family and friends poured in to celebrate this sweet little girl's life. unfortunately isabelle wasn't feeling very well but after the party, when she went home, she told her nanny and baboo that she had so much fun and she continued to talk about her party in the weeks to come to anyone who would listen.

isabelle continued her brave battle with neuroblastoma for 57 more days after her 5th birthday party. she passed away surrounded by her family and knowing that so many people loved her.

in the days following her passing i struggled with the unfairness of it all. thankfully i had gotten the opportunity to visit with isabelle in the hospital a few days prior and gifted her with photos from the birthday party. together we looked through them and she pointed out pictures of her and her friends playing the games and opening gifts. i wished more in that moment then in any other, that a miracle would take place and this little girl would live a long and healthy life outside of the hospital walls. i wanted that so bad for her. to be able to grow up and to continue becoming blissfully aware of just how beautiful life can be.

but, there are those lives that are meant to shine super bright for just a short time. it doesn't make sense. it never will. but i can promise you this, when you're given moments with a life as extraordinary and beautiful as isabelle's, they never fade. those moments plant a good seed in your heart that grows and in that way, isabelle lives on. she lives on in so many many lives. seeds are growing everywhere. she's created a garden of love and goodness that shares it's beauty with the world every single day.

i have reminders of isabelle and our short friendship everywhere. in frames, on the refrigerator and around my wrist. those are things i can see everyday. but what i love most is what she planted in my heart. i nourish that gift and share it with the world to the best of my ability every day.
